How does it feel to be observed constantly?
- Every swipe of a credit or debit card.
- Every request to a voice command speaker.
- Every click tracking our internet and social media behavior.
- GPS tracking our cell phones and accessing personal data.
- Home security cameras capturing our movements.
- Malicious tracking designed solely to defraud us.
And the list goes on.
Observing Leadership
Interestingly, leaders are also under constant observation by their teams.
Team members are tracking whether leaders:
- Uphold the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
- Demonstrate the behaviors they expect of the team.
- Say what they mean and mean what they say.
And the list goes on.
The Impact of Being Watched
Research suggests that people tend to improve their behavior when they know they are being observed. This is true in business, society, and leadership.
But here’s the bigger question:
What would you stand for if no one was watching or judging you?
When our actions stem from integrity rather than external perception, we can create a more authentic and meaningful impact both as individuals and as leaders.
